Guy Fi: The Fictions that Rule Men's Lives

Cultural masculine expectations strongly influence many men's behavior, sometimes in destructive ways.  Guy Fi: The Fictions that Rule Men's Lives is part stage show, part lecture, that addresses in humorous and engaging ways the ways that men are encouraged to behave and experience themselves.  It is very difficult to resist a pressure that one cannot name, but once these fictions are exposed and understood, men are in better position to resist cultural pressure when it conflicts with other life goals.

Dr. Scott D. Johnson, Associate Dean, School of Arts & Sciences and Director of Advising, University of Richmond

Commons 305

Stereotypes abound about the ways men communicate-or don't.  Popular movies often depict college men as emotionally disconnected and relationally challenged, while best-selling authors detail dramatic communication differences between men and women.  Our own experiences can also lead us to broad generalizations about gender and communication.  In this session participants will explore what the research says about how well our generalizations fit the ways college men communicate and consider how improved communication can enhance their college (and life) experience.
